On 21st December I lost my brother, aged 23, in a car accident. He had been called in to work to finish one last job before the Christmas break, he was meant to back by lunchtime. On his way to work along the A249 we believe he lost control of the car due to black ice. It went off the road and hit a break in the kerb beside a manhole cover and flipped. By the time mum and I had been notified and taken to hospital; he was in theatre which gave us hope. Unfortunately by 11am that morning we lost him.
As you can imagine, Christmas was cancelled from that point. My neighbours, who have been fantastic, and my other family members visited the crash site the day after to leave flowers. As I write this, the entirety of my front lawn is covered in bouquets from the funeral. It was held the day after what would have been his 24th birthday. It was overwhelming to see the numbers of people who knew and loved Matthew. Over 200 people attended that day and many more were not able to. I'm still not sure what I have been doing during the four weeks it has been since that fateful day and all of us are trying to get back to 'normality'.
My brother was quite a busy young man, he had fingers in so many pies. He had so many interests and hobbies, archery included. Most of all he was a keen motorcyclist and re-enactor. He belonged to several bike organisations; Invicta Bike Club, R.A.T. pack, BSA owners club and the Vintage Motorcycle Club. He loved his bikes and owned four, three sports and one classic which he was renovating. He took up re-enacting in 2006 when he joined Panzer Lehr, a World War 2 German army group. This took him across the country, meeting so many people and spreading his infectious smile. He joined the Royal Norfolks earlier this year and was planning to learn jive and swing dancing-to meet more girls in my opinion! As well as these main hobbies, he was an extremely talented engineer. Anything model-based he did it; trains, plastic kits, boats, planes, hovercraft, even scratch building steam boilers. Of course, it goes without saying he was a fantastic brother too and will be sadly missed.
I will remain resolute in obtaining my goals in honour of Jeremy Willson and now of my brother.
